Another night in a Wal-Mart parking lot usually doesn’t leave everyone in the best of moods, but we had an ample breakfast of muffins and fruit that the Bigelows gave us and finished our trek to San Francisco. California is one long state. We decided to take CA 1, aka the Pacific Coast Highway all the way up. There were some great views. It is awesome to see how the mountains meet the ocean to form the most western edge of the country.
Driving along the coast we stumbled upon some elephant seals. These are quite the odd creatures; they kind of look like bags of Jell-O with fins and a face. Most were sleeping, but others were sparring, throwing sand around, and generally making strange gurgling noises that sounded like a combination of burping and flatulence. As a bonus we almost caught another rodent!
Almost had this one, too |
The van survived the San Francisco hills and we arrived at the home of Eli’s friend Billy. He took us to a cool spot to view the Golden Gate Bridge; the remnant of an old WWII bunker sitting on the coast. So far the city has us impressed and our hosts have been more than gracious.
